ASBP Cites Concern About Effects of Low-Fat Studies
The American Society of Bariatric Physicians (ASBP) is concerned that a recent WHI study, appearing in the latest Journal of the American Medical Association, will result in the American public feeling as if the “rug has been pulled out from under them.” Who can the public trust to provide advice on healthy eating? Seek an expert. The American Society of Bariatric Physicians has over 50 years of developing successful weight/metabolism management strategies for individual patients.
The study suggests that low-fat diets do not protect against heart disease, stroke, colorectal or breast cancer. However, one side of a worthy study was not done – that of evaluating the effect of restricting carbohydrates and total calories or identifying which types of dietary fats should be included in the eating plan. To define a weight management/health strategy, the whole picture should be studied in order to truly serve the many that are obese and desperately searching for answers.
Our nation is in crisis - an obesity crisis. When strongly held beliefs about health strategies are found to be less effective than hoped for, it’s hard for the public to find some direction.
Our goal is to give the public hope. There is help to be found in a cutting-edge medical science called bariatrics. ASBP provides advanced training in the treatment of obesity, metabolic disorders and related conditions.
Our membership is as diverse and individual as the populations we serve. Our physicians’ approaches differ as they match patients to individually- tailored programs, knowing one approach is not the answer. As part of the treatment process, bariatric physicians do blood, chemical and hormonal evaluations on patients to determine which program is best for each individual. Medically supervised treatment is based upon the results, which may change over the term of a program.
These recent findings should not deter individuals from attempting to improve their health status. The ASBP advises the public to seek information from those who have the tools and know how to use them-qualified bariatric physicians. For more information see www.asbp.org or 303.770.2526.
